On the Sunday before the Nativity of the Lord (Of the Holy Fathers according to the flesh of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ), His Eminence Vladimir, Metropolitan of Chisinau and all Moldova, officiated the Divine and Holy Liturgy in the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Nativity of the Lord in Chisinau.
Praying with the Archpastor were Protopriest Vadim Cheibaș, Metropolitan Secretary and Ecclesiarch of the Cathedral, the clergy of the holy place, as well as the faithful, who came to express through prayer their gratitude to God for every good gift and to ask from the Heavenly Father the blessing of His goodness.
This Sunday, the last before the Feast of the Incarnation of our Saviour Jesus Christ, is also called the Sunday of the Forefathers according to the flesh of the Saviour Jesus Christ, because at today’s Holy Liturgy we heard the Genealogy of our Lord Jesus Christ, that is, the list of His ancestors according to the flesh. This genealogy was recorded by the Evangelist Matthew and traces the lineage from Jesus to David, His forefather, and further back to Abraham.
This entire period is divided into three stages, each consisting of fourteen generations. This succession of names is more than a simple list of forefathers according to the flesh; it is a text that points us to the symbolic values contemplated by Saint Evangelist Matthew when he composed the list of the forty-two generations.
